Masculinity and aesthetics: citizens of modernity in the 19th Century Baltic Sea Region
The project is a gender theoretical and historical study of masculinity as a cultural construction. By focusing on masculinity, the project aims to critically investigate the gender-coding of the modern political subject, as a man and as a citizen. The project investigates how masculinity changes over time, during the long 19th Century, and the primary material consists mainly of fiction, which is sourced from countries in the Baltic region. Otherwise, the project's multidisciplinary approach and in addition to scientific literature, gender studies and historical tools will also political philosophy, aesthetics and film studies to be accommodated in the analysis.
