Apostolis Papakostas is Professor of Sociology at the School of Social Sciences and Research Director at the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) at Södertörn University College, Stockholm, Sweden. Center for East European Studies.

 

At CBEES, Professor Papakostas leads the multidisciplinary research theme, "The social landscapes of the political," together with Associate Professor Ann-Cathrine Jungar. This research theme coordinates several projects at the intersections between political science, history, ethnology, economic history, human geography, sociology, gender studies and business administration. Professor Papakostas is responsible for the faculty-overarching "Södertörn Lectures" and the editor of the series with the same name. In addition, he heads, together with Professor Sven Hort, the research program,,"Functioning neighbourhoods in segregated cities: a research program on urban life, democracy and welfare around the Baltic sea."

 

Professor Papakostas's own research topics include urban studies, comparative macro-sociology and the organizational aspects of society and social change. In 1995, he received his PhD from the Department of Sociology, Stockholm University, as well as a docentship in 2002. He has been involved in several research projects concerning the organizational and institutional changes in modern Swedish society at the Stockholm Centre for Organizational Research (Score), where he is an "Affiliated Scholar." Score

 

Professor Papakostas served as a member of the board of the Swedish Sociological Association Swedish Sociological Association and of the Nordic Sociological Association Nordic Sociological Association. He is the former editor of the journal Nordic Organization Studies, (NOS) Nordic Organization Studies.

 

Professor Papakostas has published books and articles on social movements, state development, political parties, corruption, and social change. His theoretical focus is on the organizational bases of social life, and his perspective has been comparative and oriented toward macro-structural stability and change. He is currently working on a book about the organizational bases of social trust. His publications includes:
