Located in southern Stockholm, just 18 minutes from the city centre, the university contributes to as well as draws from the strength and diversity of the capital. The campus offers its 12 000 students modern teaching facilities and a state of the art library.

Södertörn University is known for its emphasis on diversity, interdisciplinary exposure and critical thinking. There are strong links between teaching and research and many of the teaching staff are also active researchers. The internationally renowned Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) is one of the centres that offer vibrant research environments for researchers from different countries and doctoral students at the university.

Research at Södertörn University covers many different disciplines and areas. There are high quality, creative research environments in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Education studies. An important research profile is that of Baltic and East European Studies. This gathers many different subjects and research groups around issues relating to the conditions and processes found in the Baltic Region and Eastern Europe.

Södertörn University offers more than 70 study programmes within the Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Education. In addition, there are over 400 courses that students may choose to study independently. The university has the right to confer Bachelors and Masters degrees. The university has also the right to confer doctorates within four areas:

  • Historical Studies
  • Cultural Theory
  • Environmental Studies
  • Politics, Economy and the Organization of Society
